Sundaramoorthy Nayanar
He admonished the Lord with three eyes for taking away his eyesight
Sundaramoorthy Nayanar dwelt in Kailash, as Siva’s personal friend. He was attracted to two of Parvathi’s assistants. And so Siva instructed him to take birth on Earth, complete his karmas (caused by the distraction) and when Sundarar pleaded for mercy, Siva promised that He would take charge of him at the appropriate time. So Sundarar took birth on Earth.
At Thiruvennainalloor temple a voice directed Sundaramoorthy to sing the Lord’s praises in Tamil. When he protested that he had no such ability, the voice instructed him to commence with the same word ‘Pittha’ he used earlier to chastise the Lord. And Sundaramoorthy Nayanar sang the praises of the Lord. He got married to Sangili Nachiar and Paravai Nachiar. He breached his vow of not leaving his second wife’s house and lost his eyesight in consequence.
He admonished the Lord with three eyes (Siva: Mukkannan) for taking away his eyesight. When he approached the Tirumullaivoyil temple, he asked the Lord in a fit of rage, ‘Do you exist?’ (neer ulleera?). God replied in jest, ‘I am here. You can go on your way’. (Yaam Ulom. Neevir poveer).
